Concrete silos in Iowa. Storage for cow food Tile silos were popular in the 1930's. Old silos like this one are muted echoes of a long ago livestock operation.
Grain storage bins and grain augers enable farmers to handle and store grain on their own farms. Working like a giant cork screw, the auger screw turns in the auger pipe and draws the grain through. Hopper at base of bin is the pick up point for the mechanical augers.

Cribs are used to store corn on the ear.  They are commonly seen on livestock farms.  These structures are known as "wire cribs" or "corn pens". Stored farm grain will be transported by train or truck.

Illinois Corn cribs, 1930's. When corn was stored on the ear, farmers used structures like these. Extreme ventilation promoted open air drying of crop.
