Why Plant a Garden?

There are many reasons to start gardening. Gardens have aesthetic value; they are pleasant to view and give a sense of self-accomplishment. Providing a means of exercise for the body and the mind, gardens also provide therapeutic value. But, gardens can provide so much more.

Landscaping and flower gardening can improve property values and allow homeowners to display individuality. Often times, flower gardens are used as a place to retreat, relax and enjoy nature’s beauty.

Vegetable gardening puts food on the table, generating a sense of confidence and security with home-grown produce. Raising and home-processing can also reduce the amount of money otherwise spent on fresh or canned products. Harvesting and selling fresh produce locally generates extra income, while donating fresh produce to charitable groups recognizes and fulfills the needs of others.

Socialization in gardening can be rewarding and educational. Having the family working together throughout the season offers quality time spent with the ones you love most. Starting a neighborhood garden or joining community gardeners provides interaction with neighbors, organizations and local extension offices. With the ever-increasing popularity of the internet, garden knowledge can be shared worldwide.

Whether it’s family, neighbors or cyber-friends, everyone can join in on the gardening fun and harvest the benefits!
